The bass does not introduce itself — it asserts itself, fully formed and already in motion, as if the track has been playing in some other room for several minutes and you've only just opened the door. Bootsy Collins built his entire artistic identity around the principle that bass is not support but statement, and this track is the fullest expression of that idea: every other element — the talk-box vocals, the cartoon sound effects, the horn punctuations, the studio-as-instrument production tricks — exists in orbit around that gravitational bass presence. The talk-box vocal character "Bootzilla" is a superhero origin story told in funk grammar, absurdist and entirely serious simultaneously, which is a combination Collins pulled off better than almost anyone in the Parliament-Funkadelic extended universe. George Clinton's influence is everywhere in the production — the layering, the theatricality, the sense that the music is also a mythology — but Collins brings something more physically immediate than conceptual P-Funk recordings often achieve. The sheer physical pleasure of the bass line is the point; the narrative and the character and the comedy are the delivery mechanism. It arrived in 1978 at the peak of the cosmic funk moment, when Black musicians were claiming science fiction as a genre that belonged to them. You reach for this when you want music that requires no justification, that is simply and completely itself, that dares you not to move.
