Interpretation

There is something cinematic in the old French New Wave sense to this track — unhurried, observational, slightly melancholic about beauty itself. "cinema" opens with a guitar figure that has the quality of a establishing shot, wide and patient. Wave to earth layers texture here with a bit more density than some of their sparer work: bass sitting warm in the low end, subtle percussion that marks time without insisting on it, occasional keyboard swells that arrive like light changing. Daniel's voice takes on a slightly more wistful quality than usual, the delivery hovering between memory and present tense in a way that is difficult to locate temporally. The lyric uses the movie theater as a container for something larger — the way that certain experiences of beauty make us simultaneously present and nostalgic, the impossibility of being fully inside a moment you recognize as precious. The song understands that real feeling often has this double quality: joy already shadowed by its own eventual absence. Sonically the production has warmth rather than brightness — a difference in quality, not just temperature. This is music for a rainy afternoon inside, for watching something beautiful through glass, for the feeling of watching credits roll over something that moved you and not yet wanting to return to the ordinary.
