Interpretation

Lo-fi before lo-fi was a genre label, this track sounds like a bedroom thought that barely made it into the world. The production is almost aggressively understated: a thin drum machine pattern, guitar that sounds recorded through a phone speaker, vocals so close they feel like they're being whispered into your ear while you pretend to watch a movie. Clairo's voice is young and flat in the most intentional way — unperformed, disaffected without being cold. The song is about a crush that exists almost entirely in the narrator's head, the specific longing of wanting someone who barely registers your existence. It was one of the defining texts of the 2017-2018 DIY-girl-bedroom-pop wave, a moment when teenage interiority became an aesthetic. Listen to it in headphones at 11pm when you can't sleep and something unnamed is bothering you, or when you need to remember what it felt like to want something small and impossible.
