The riff arrives immediately and doesn't apologize for itself — a coiled, menacing thing that Kim Thayil extracts from a down-tuned guitar with a tone that feels somehow both massive and angular. Cornell's vocal enters and the dynamic becomes something unusual: he sounds genuinely unmoored, searching, the melodies reaching upward in a way that reads less like triumph and more like desperation toward something just out of grasp. Matt Cameron's drumming gives the track its nervous energy, pushing forward even when the arrangement pulls back. The emotional core is a kind of bleak self-inventory, the recognition that external validation won't fix something fundamentally interior — but the music never moralizes, it just inhabits that feeling with full commitment. This is one of Soundgarden's great mid-period statements, before Superunknown's more psychedelic ambitions, when the band was still wrestling grunge's heaviness toward something more psychologically complex. You listen to this when you're feeling unsettled in your own skin, when the restlessness won't locate its source, and somehow the confirmation that someone else felt it this precisely is its own kind of relief.
