Pure kinetic aggression from the first second — the tempo is almost unreasonably fast for a band this heavy, Thayil's guitar scraping and clawing against Cornell's vocal like they're in open competition. There's something almost comically furious about it, a rage so total it tips toward absurdity, which was always part of Soundgarden's trick: they understood that extreme emotion played completely straight has an inherent dark humor. Cornell's performance here is feral, one of the most physically committed vocal deliveries in the entire grunge catalog, all grit and attack, the voice treated less as melody-carrier than as another percussive instrument. The lyrical imagery is claustrophobic, industrial, about constraint and the violent fantasy of escape — and the music enacts that fantasy in real time. This is 1991 Soundgarden still connected to their most abrasive impulses, before they fully incorporated the psychedelia and blues that would shape their later work. It's a workout song, a driving-too-fast song, a song for when the ambient frustration of daily life needs something that matches its volume.
