Out There

Dinosaur Jr.'s "Out There" is a wall of overdriven guitar that somehow stays melodic underneath the squall. J Mascis layers fuzzed-out riffs and a famously molten, extended solo over a loose, almost lurching rhythm section, the production deliberately raw and saturated in the early-'90s SST-into-major-label tradition. His vocal is the opposite of the guitar firepower — a flat, sleepy, slightly whiny drawl, half-mumbled like he can barely be bothered, which is precisely the charm.
