I Alone

There's a coiled aggression in "I Alone" that never fully releases — which is exactly where its power lives. The guitar riff is elastic and percussive, almost fungal in how it burrows into the rhythm, and the drums underneath are doing something syncopated and physical that makes it almost impossible to hold still. But the production keeps everything slightly compressed, slightly restrained, building pressure that the song never fully vents. Kowalczyk's vocal performance here is one of the more underrated of his career: he phrases with an evangelist's urgency, each line delivered like a warning or a revelation, his voice rougher and more combative than in the band's more anthemic work. The lyric is a confrontation — with someone, with a self-mythologizing rival, with the seduction of false certainty. There's a spiritual dimension to the challenge it's issuing, a sense that knowing your own limitations is a form of grace. Culturally it sat right at the intersection of grunge's waning dominance and the more expansive, arena-ready alt-rock that would follow — too raw for radio comfort, too melodic for pure punk. It plays best in headphones, with the volume high enough to feel the bass in the sternum, during the particular kind of restless energy that comes before a big decision or a confrontation you've been avoiding.
