Places
Shlohmo
"Places" pulls from a more wistful register than much of Shlohmo's catalog. There's a softness here — not warmth exactly, but a kind of blurred nostalgia, the sonic equivalent of a photograph left in sunlight too long. The melodic elements carry genuine longing, fragments of something that once had more definition, now smeared at the edges. The rhythm is sparse, giving the atmospheric elements room to breathe and wander. Unlike tracks in his catalog that feel anchored in the present moment, this one gestures toward distance — geographic, temporal, emotional. The title does a lot of work: places as locations left behind, or places as positions we once occupied in relationships that no longer hold us. The production occupies a transitional zone between electronic music and ambient, making it difficult to describe as either a beat tape track or an ambient piece, which is precisely its interest. The beat's presence is ghost-like — you feel it more than follow it. For listeners familiar with this style, the reference points are obvious: the California beat scene, post-Flying Lotus introspective electronics. But the mood is distinctly Shlohmo's own — more private, less optimistic than much of that scene. Reach for this when driving through somewhere you used to know, or when trying to locate the feeling of a person you've stopped thinking about deliberately.
