Interpretation

Dirtier in both texture and temperament than most of Bones' catalog, "Dirt" feels like something unearthed rather than produced. The instrumental is raw and distorted at the edges, built around a loop that sounds like it's degrading with each rotation — guitars that scrape, percussion that thud-cracks rather than snaps, bass that blurs into the low end of the mix and never fully clarifies. Bones inhabits this space with the same deadpan certainty he always carries, but here there's a specific bitterness underneath the flatness, something that reads like resentment with the fire burned out of it. The song belongs to the uglier side of underground rap, where beauty is never the goal and authenticity is measured by how few concessions are made to comfort. Lyrically it circles the theme that the track's title implies — being dismissed, discarded, existing in the margins — but handled not with grief but with a kind of cold vindication. Bones seems least interested in the listener's sympathy and most interested in documenting the feeling exactly as it lives in him, which paradoxically makes the songs more connecting, not less. You listen to this when you've moved past hurt into something harder and quieter. It fits the sonic world of SoundCloud's darkest corners circa 2014-2017, a moment when misery was produced with lo-fi intentionality and that roughness was the whole point.
