Taeko Onuki's "Peter Rabbit and Me" is a small miracle of Japanese sophisti-pop restraint, from an era when Tokyo studio musicians were making some of the most refined records on earth. The production is spacious and unhurried — acoustic piano, brushed drums, a bass that walks rather than pushes, and the kind of string or synth-pad writing that suggests rather than swells. Onuki's voice is famously cool, almost affectless, and that reserve is the point: she sings about childhood and its picture books with the flat clarity of someone examining a photograph, not embracing it. The Beatrix Potter reference works as a portal — the rabbit belongs to a self she can no longer reach, and the song's whole emotional weight sits in that gap between the remembered book and the adult holding it. Nothing is overstated. There's no crying, no swell, just a slow accumulation of detail until you notice the ache is already there. This comes out of the same 1970s–80s Japanese scene that produced city pop's glossier hits, but Onuki was always the introspective end of it.
