"Dashboard" hits like a vehicle changing speed suddenly — the whole band arriving at once, guitars compressed and bright, the rhythm section locked into something that feels both anxious and euphoric. Modest Mouse were by this point writing with a fuller palette, and "Dashboard" uses that expansion to create a sound that is genuinely hard to emotionally locate: it's too urgent to be joyful, too melodically open to be desperate. The drums push the tempo without quite rushing it, and Brock's vocal delivery here is more melodic than usual — he's still singing like someone who came to music sideways, but the phrasing has a pop directness that suits the subject matter. The song meditates on agency and its absence, on the question of who actually controls the direction of a life — the imagery of cars and motion running through Modest Mouse's catalog here being put to explicitly philosophical use. There's something almost ecstatic in the way the chorus opens up, as if the uncertainty is being celebrated rather than resolved. It's music that acknowledges being lost while generating enough kinetic energy to make the lostness feel livable. You put this on when you need momentum more than answers, when the act of moving feels more important than knowing where you're going.
