Interpretation

A transmission from a blown-out basement somewhere between noise and ecstasy, where the distortion isn't a flaw but the entire aesthetic argument. The production sounds like something discovered on a degraded cassette — synths that bleed and crackle, drum machines hitting with the dull thud of a padded fist, bass frequencies that seem to arrive from another room through thick concrete walls. Alice Glass's voice is less sung than submerged, buried beneath layers of processing until it becomes another texture in the mix rather than a focal point, which paradoxically makes it more haunting — it reaches you as if from underwater. The emotional register is simultaneously ecstatic and desperate, a very specific feeling of losing yourself in a dark room to music that is actively trying to overwhelm you. There's something genuinely confrontational in the refusal to be clean or legible. This belonged to a moment in underground electronic music when lo-fi maximalism felt like genuine transgression, the sound of people building something feverish and temporary in opposition to anything polished. It's music for the come-up and the crash simultaneously, for that hour when the boundary between pleasure and exhaustion dissolves entirely.
