Interpretation

"Ball and Biscuit" is seven minutes of slow-burning blues mythology — Jack White taking the Delta blues idiom and stretching it until it nearly tears, filling the space with guitar work that is simultaneously reverent and grotesque. The slide guitar howls and weeps throughout, channeling Blind Willie Johnson and Son House but run through amplifiers cranked past comfort, the tone thick and overdriven, full of harmonic overtones that feel alive and unpredictable. Meg White's drumming is skeletal — just enough kick and snare to mark time — which gives Jack's guitar the entire room to wander and swagger. He plays with the patience of someone who knows exactly how long to make you wait. The vocal delivery is theatrical, leaning hard into the persona of the bluesman, declarative and cocky, making claims about himself that are absurd enough to be funny and committed enough to be seductive. The song is essentially a long performance of masculine bravado filtered through blues convention — but White understands the form well enough to make it feel like more than pastiche. It belongs to the moment when the White Stripes were definitively the most interesting guitar band on earth, when *Elephant* arrived and silenced arguments.
