Useless
Kruder & Dorfmeister
Where the previous track simmers, this one barely moves — it is deep-sea music, pressure-heavy and slow, built around a bass pulse that functions almost like a heartbeat heard through water. The Depeche Mode source material gets entirely reimagined: what was electronic pop becomes a late-night confessional, the vocals stripped of their original context and repositioned as something fragile floating over a vast, indifferent production. Dave Gahan's voice here sounds genuinely lost — not performatively dark, but quietly undone, and the arrangement honors that by never overwhelming it. The arrangement breathes with long intervals between events, placing trust in empty space in a way that commercial music rarely dares. This is the K&D aesthetic at its most refined — Vienna's answer to the question of what it means to take pop music seriously enough to slow it down until its bones show. It's a track for solitary mornings after bad nights, for sitting at a kitchen table watching light change, for the specific loneliness that comes with having exactly what you thought you wanted and feeling nothing. It asks almost nothing of the listener except presence, and rewards that presence with something close to catharsis.
