Interpretation

"Lounge Act" sits in an interesting tension between its somewhat sardonic title and its genuine emotional ferocity. The guitar work here is among the most melodically interesting on Nevermind — Cobain's riff has an almost searching quality, coiling around itself before the chorus releases it into something rawer. The rhythm section locks in tight, Grohl's drumming controlled but physical, the bass sitting just beneath the surface with enough presence to be felt more than heard on cheap speakers. Cobain's vocal delivery carries a possessiveness that feels barely managed, the words arriving with an irritated edge that suggests the emotion behind them isn't entirely comfortable to express. The song is about jealousy and control and the uncomfortable awareness of one's own irrational need to contain another person — it's self-aware enough to know how it sounds, and slightly ashamed of itself for meaning it anyway. Within the Nevermind sequence it functions as one of the more personal and guarded tracks, which paradoxically makes it feel more revealing. This is the song for when you catch yourself thinking something about someone that you know you shouldn't think and you're not entirely ready to examine why.
