Oasis wrote "Half the World Away" as an act of young restlessness, a lad from Manchester dreaming toward an elsewhere he couldn't name. Aurora turned it into something else entirely. Her 2015 version strips the original of its Britpop musculature and rebuilds it from almost nothing: a piano that moves carefully, as if uncertain of the floor; a voice that sounds like it's singing from a great height or a great depth, it's hard to say which. Aurora was seventeen when she recorded it, and the recording carries that — not inexperience exactly, but a particular kind of not-yet-compromised purity of feeling. The production grows slightly as the song progresses but never reaches anything you'd call loud, the swells arriving and receding like water rather than crashing. What the cover does is take the original's urgency and transform it into something more contemplative — the feeling isn't escape-from, it's the suspended state of between, the condition of being someone who understands they belong elsewhere but hasn't yet gotten there. This version became famous attached to a Christmas advertisement, and there's something fitting in that — it's a song about absence and longing that somehow produces warmth rather than desolation. You'd hear it most truthfully in the early morning of a gray day when the world hasn't yet started, and you're sitting with the knowledge that your life is probably not happening in the right place.
