Deepnest (Hollow Knight)
Christopher Larkin
Larkin abandons melody almost entirely here, constructing instead a sonic environment that functions like darkness made audible. Dissonant drones hang in the low register, shifting almost imperceptibly while high-frequency textures — something between scraping and breathing — move across the stereo field without pattern or resolution. There are sounds that might be strings processed beyond recognition, or might be something entirely synthetic, the ambiguity itself becoming a source of unease. The piece understands that the imagination is more frightening than any explicit horror, and so it gives you almost nothing concrete to hold onto: no rhythm, no melodic anchor, just a formless threat that seems to come from every direction at once. Emotionally it induces the specific dread of navigating somewhere hostile in the dark, where your sense of scale has collapsed and you cannot trust your own perception. The temperature of it is cold and damp and close. Culturally it belongs to the lineage of horror ambient work — Lustmord, early Coil — but filtered through the particular intimacy of a game world that asks you to keep moving through your fear. You reach for this music when you want to sit inside a feeling of profound unease without it becoming overwhelming, when the ordinary world feels thin and you want something that acknowledges the strangeness underneath it.
