Mystery of Love
Fingers Inc.
Larry Heard's masterwork under the Fingers Inc. banner stands apart even within deep house's highest tier — a composition so internally still it creates its own gravity. The foundation is a Roland TR-909 pattern so simple it borders on meditative, with kick and hi-hat occupying almost the full sonic picture at the opening before thin synthesizer chords bleed in from the edges. Those chords are the emotional center: rich, unresolved, cycling through a progression that never quite settles, generating a sustained mood of tender uncertainty. The melody that emerges feels less composed than discovered, as if Heard was reaching for something he couldn't name and caught the edge of it here. Vocally the track carries a breathy, almost reverent quality — the voice treated with enough reverb to suggest distance, as if the singer is communicating from somewhere far inside themselves. The lyrics contemplate love as something mysterious and beyond comprehension rather than something to be possessed or understood, a philosophical position delivered without pretension. This was made in Chicago in 1986 on cheap gear in a bedroom, and that origin story is somehow audible — there's a directness to the sound, an absence of industry calculation, that gives it lasting honesty. You reach for it during introspective moments, or when you need music that takes your interior life seriously.
