Forever
Alex G
Alex G has always written at the frequency of things people don't say aloud, and "Forever" captures the particular gentleness with which he approaches the most unwieldy feelings. The guitar playing has a quality of improvised intimacy — open chords strummed with the casualness of someone playing for themselves in a bedroom, which is exactly the context from which so much of his early work emerged. His voice is soft and slightly nasal, occasionally slipping into registers that sound almost accidentally vulnerable, a delivery style that makes sincerity feel undefended rather than performed. The lo-fi recording texture is not an aesthetic choice layered over the song but seems genuinely native to it, as though the song could only exist at this fidelity, as though polish would constitute a betrayal. Lyrically he operates through oblique angles — the core emotional statement arrives through images that seem sideways, peripheral, which makes them land harder when they do. There's something adolescent about the feeling of this track, in the best sense: unguarded, in excess of what's prudent to admit, concerned with the enormity of ordinary duration. You'd listen to this alone, probably, in the way you do with music that feels embarrassingly close to something private — not ashamed of it, just aware that it requires a certain solitude to receive properly.
