"Music" operates as something close to a manifesto disguised as a dance track. The production is immaculate and dense — synthesizer arpeggios that recall late-70s Kraftwerk, a four-on-the-floor kick drum buried just enough to feel felt rather than heard, and harmonic layers that expand during the chorus into something genuinely euphoric. Where much of Sakanaction's work sits in shadow, "Music" reaches toward light while never quite surrendering its melancholy. Yamada's vocal performance here is unusually communal — there's a choral quality to how the harmonies are arranged, as if the song is being sung to a room rather than confessed to a listener. The lyrical content is bracingly self-referential, looping through references to music history and the act of listening itself, asking what songs do to the people who need them. It sits in a tradition of Japanese electronic-rock bands who used meta-textual songwriting — music about music — as a vehicle for genuine emotional excavation rather than clever posturing.
