Bowie's vocal performance here is bifurcated: he sings both a low, almost narrating baritone and a higher, more theatrical register, and the two voices circle each other like the characters named in the title. The lyric suggests a relationship built on fundamental asymmetry — beauty and monstrousness coexisting in unstable proximity. It is not a love song so much as a study in romantic dread.
