Interpretation

Where "Sound and Vision" contracts, this track from the same album expands into something uneasy and cinematic. The arrangement is dense with Eno's synthesizer treatments — tidal washes of processed sound that suggest grandeur while remaining fundamentally cold. There is a waltz-like pulse buried underneath, giving the whole thing a slightly disorienting formal elegance, like a ballroom in a ruined building. Bowie's vocal performance here is bifurcated: he sings both a low, almost narrating baritone and a higher, more theatrical register, and the two voices circle each other like the characters named in the title. The lyric suggests a relationship built on fundamental asymmetry — beauty and monstrousness coexisting in unstable proximity. It is not a love song so much as a study in romantic dread. This track represents Bowie at his most operatic and his most alienated simultaneously, the avant-garde impulse and the pop instinct locked in their own version of the tension the title describes. Listen to it alone, late at night, when you are thinking about something you cannot resolve.
