Draw the Line

There is a moment before "Draw the Line" truly begins where a lone, slithering slide guitar line announces itself like something dangerous waking up — Joe Perry coaxing a riff out of a swamp nobody had names for yet. When the full band crashes in, it carries the weight of a group running on fumes and adrenaline in equal measure, the rhythm section locking into a groove that feels both tight and on the verge of collapse. Steven Tyler's voice is a ragged instrument here, not singing so much as taunting — his delivery somewhere between a sneer and a howl, daring the song to keep up with him. Lyrically, it circles the mythology of its own excess, the rock-and-roll life as a dare accepted without reading the terms. There's no redemption offered, no moral. The production is deliberately lean, almost confrontational in its rawness, captured at the height of Aerosmith's most chemically combustible period.
