The opening seconds establish something that almost defies genre categorization — Peter Murphy's voice arrives over a guitar figure that is simultaneously monotonous and hypnotic, droning with an intensity that feels less like performance and more like invocation. The production is deliberately flat and claustrophobic, everything recorded with a close-mic rawness that makes the listener feel present in the room, trapped inside the same four walls as the musicians. Murphy's vocal delivery is theatrical to the point of absurdity and then crosses back through absurdity into something genuinely unsettling — he inhabits the song rather than singing it.
