Despite its title, this piece is not about the restlessness of not sleeping — it is about the particular quality of attention that emerges when the rest of the world has gone quiet and only you remain awake. Built on a slowly cycling guitar figure that repeats with slight variations, it has a repetitive quality that functions almost hypnotically, each iteration slightly different from the last in ways that are felt more than consciously registered. Piano notes drift in and out like half-formed thoughts, never quite completing a phrase before dissolving. The tempo is slow but not static — there is a gentle forward motion, the sense of time passing without urgency. Emotionally it carries a kind of bittersweet alertness, the feeling of being simultaneously tired and too awake, aware of the house around you and the darkness outside it. The production preserves silence as an active element: what does not happen is as important as what does. Marconi Union's characteristic sense of harmonic ambiguity is present — chords that feel unresolved, suspensions that are never quite released — giving the music an open-ended quality, as if it could continue indefinitely without arriving anywhere.
