Interpretation

"Harry's Game" is one of the most haunting pieces of music ever attached to television, Clannad's theme for a 1982 thriller about the Troubles in Northern Ireland. Sung entirely in Irish Gaelic, its lyric is a tiny meditation on impermanence — we are merely passing through this world, nothing matters but love — yet most listeners never parse the words, experiencing it instead as pure wordless atmosphere. The arrangement is almost shockingly spare: layered vocal harmonies floating over the faintest synthesizer wash, no percussion, no resolution, the voices stacking into a translucent choir that seems to hover rather than progress. Máire Brennan's lead is crystalline and achingly cool, her sisters and the family blending into something that sounds older than pop and newer than chant. This is the sound that would soon birth Enya, then a member of the group, and you can hear the entire Celtic-ambient genre being invented in real time. It won an Ivor Novello and later soundtracked a famous Volkswagen advert, but its real home is the late-night drift, headphones on, lights low. There's grief threaded through its beauty, fitting for a drama about sectarian violence, but the song refuses anger — it offers only a kind of luminous, mist-over-the-bog melancholy. Three and a half minutes that feel suspended outside time, equal parts lullaby and lament.
