Eric Nam's 2019 ballad opens with a pretense of restraint — spare piano, a voice held just above a whisper — and then earns its swell slowly, adding strings and a rhythm section that never quite crests into a power ballad's obligatory belt. That withholding is the whole point. The Korean title, roughly "how could I love even the parting," poses a question the song refuses to resolve: if love and its ending are one continuous thing, then loving fully means loving the wound that follows. Nam's tone here is warmer and more conversational than his usual polished pop register; he sings in the middle of his range, letting small cracks in the phrasing do work that vibrato would cheapen. The lyric doesn't accuse or plead. It sits in the moment after the decision has been made, when both people still love each other and that changes nothing. There's a peculiar Korean ballad tradition at work — the 이별 song as a kind of dignity ritual, where composure is the offering — and Nam plays it straight while sounding like a person rather than a genre. It's a song for the drive home after, or the late hour when you've stopped crying and are simply thinking clearly, which is worse.
