Paranoia has rarely sounded this physically urgent. "Life During Wartime" runs on a chassis of interlocking funk guitars and a rhythm section that never lets up, but the energy isn't celebratory — it's the kinetic charge of someone who genuinely believes they might need to flee at any moment. David Byrne's vocal delivery is breathless and clipped, each phrase arriving like a dispatch from a person rationing their words alongside their food and ammunition. The arrangement is deliberately stripped of luxury: no synthesizer washes, no string sweetening, just the essentials of a band moving fast and light. The production, courtesy of Brian Eno and the band themselves, has a dry, documentary quality — everything sounds present and immediate, as if recorded in a room with nowhere comfortable to sit. The lyrics describe an underground existence, a life of constant displacement and improvised survival, drawing from Cold War anxieties and urban guerrilla mythology without romanticizing either.
