Lightning Bolt
There is a brutalist architecture to this track that announces itself immediately — a single overdriven bass line that doesn't so much begin as detonate, Brian Gibson's instrument running through so many layers of distortion that it becomes something closer to a pneumatic drill than a string instrument. Brian Chippendale's drumming is superhuman in a destabilizing way, the kit sounding like it's being played simultaneously from every angle, fills cascading without resolution into more fills. The vocals filter through a microphone lodged inside Chippendale's hand-sewn mask, reducing human speech to a garbled, urgent transmission from somewhere deep inside the noise itself. The emotional register is not anger exactly — it's something more primordial, the feeling of a system under catastrophic overload. Listening, you feel your peripheral vision narrow. The Providence noise-rock underground that produced Lightning Bolt was deliberately hostile to polish and venue infrastructure (they played on floors, in the crowd), and this track embodies that anti-stage philosophy: it pulls the listener into the sound rather than projecting at them. This is music for a sweaty basement at 1am, bodies pressed close, ears ringing before the song even ends. There is genuine joy buried in the assault, a kind of ecstatic release available only to those who stop resisting the volume and let it reorganize their nervous system entirely.
