The Wicked Symphony

"The Wicked Symphony" opens with orchestral grandeur that's almost classical in its staging — full strings, brass punctuation, a sense of an overture unfolding. Then the electric guitars arrive and the piece snaps into hard rock motion, the two sonic worlds existing in genuine synthesis rather than awkward collision. Tobias Sammet understands that neither the classical nor the metal element should feel like a concession to the other, and here he achieves that balance more completely than almost anywhere else in his catalog. The vocal ensemble across the track — multiple guests trading verses and harmonies — creates the texture of a theatrical cast, each voice a distinct character within a shared narrative. The production is enormous without being airless, the low end providing weight while the arrangement breathes around it. Emotionally the song navigates the collision between order and chaos, between structure and transgression — the "wicked symphony" of the title is society itself, or the self in conflict, or both simultaneously. The melodic hook is constructed with the kind of craftsmanship where it feels inevitable in retrospect, as though the song could not have ended differently. This is power metal at its most compositionally ambitious, pointing toward the tradition of European rock opera that runs from Dio through Manowar through Therion.
