It's Working
MGMT
Coiling around a single hypnotic synthesizer figure, this track moves less like a song and more like a slow spiral inward. The production is dense and warm — analog textures pile on top of each other until the sound feels pressurized, almost airless, with occasional bursts of color from organs and processed percussion that dissolve before you can grab onto them. The tempo is deliberate, almost processional, which gives the whole piece a ritualistic weight. Emotionally, it sits in a state of suspended anticipation — something is building, but the payoff keeps deferring. The vocals are treated as another instrument, softened and half-submerged in reverb, more presence than declaration. Lyrically the song circles around the mechanics of creative process itself, the strange feedback loop of trying to make something meaningful while wondering if meaning is yours to manufacture. This was MGMT deliberately turning away from pop legibility, making an album (Congratulations, 2010) that alienated the fans who wanted another "Kids." "It's Working" is the thesis statement of that rebellion — patient, inward, uninterested in reward. You'd reach for it alone at night, headphones on, when you want music that doesn't explain itself.
