"Романс" does something formally surprising for Splean: it allows itself sincerity without irony as a defensive wrapper. The track is slower and more open than most of their work, built around a melodic line that has the quality of something half-remembered — a tune that seems familiar even on first hearing. Vasilyev's voice here carries a tenderness that he usually keeps at arm's length, and the arrangement honors that by staying relatively spare, letting the piano and guitar breathe rather than crowd each other. The word "romance" in Russian carries a specific literary-musical connotation, pointing toward the nineteenth-century tradition of intimate vocal compositions, and the song is aware of this inheritance without being crushed by it — it uses the form to access a genuine emotional register rather than as a costume. The lyric has the quality of address: someone speaking to someone, a direct line without the usual post-Soviet ironic insulation.
