The Return of the Los Palmas 7
Madness
There are no words here, and none are needed — this is a song that exists entirely in the language of movement. A punchy brass fanfare kicks things off like a carnival barker demanding your attention, and then the whole ensemble launches into something that feels like the most jubilant chase scene ever committed to vinyl. The horns trade melodic phrases with an almost conversational back-and-forth, the rhythm section locking into a groove so insistent it bypasses the brain entirely and goes straight to the feet. The production is crisp and punchy, with each instrument sitting in its own clearly defined space — you can hear the individual players, the sweat in the trumpet line, the way the trombone answers back with something approaching cheek. There's a faint music-hall quality underneath the ska pulse, a nod to the British seaside entertainment tradition that Madness always wore proudly, translating it into something that could fill a sweaty club in Camden. The piece builds through repetition and variation rather than conventional song structure, each pass through the theme slightly more unhinged than the last, as if the band is daring itself to see how much fun it can physically generate. This is not background music. It is an instruction to stop whatever you are doing and accept the invitation being extended by seven musicians who have decided, collectively, that right now is the right time.
