Pablo in Dub

What King Tubby does to Pablo's source material here is essentially sculptural — he takes a recording and carves away at it, removing rather than adding, until the negative space becomes the composition. The melodica surfaces and submerges unpredictably, sometimes reduced to a single trailing note soaked in reverb so deep it seems to come from another room entirely. The drums appear and disappear on Tubby's whim, the snare dropping out mid-phrase to leave a silence that somehow intensifies everything around it. Bass remains the constant, the spine that holds the piece together while everything else hallucinates. This is dub as philosophy — the idea that absence is as musical as presence, that the echo of a sound carries as much meaning as the sound itself. What it evokes emotionally is a specific kind of dissociation, pleasant and vertiginous, the feeling of being simultaneously inside and outside a piece of music. Ideal at very late hours, in rooms that have some natural reverb of their own.
