Interpretation

The cover strips away the original's synth sheen entirely and rebuilds it on a foundation of horns and ska pulse, which transforms something wistful and new-wave into something communal and almost reckless. Where a-ha's version felt like longing filtered through cold studio air, this one feels like longing filtered through a sweaty venue with people packed shoulder to shoulder. The trumpet lead carries the famous hook with surprising tenderness before the whole thing explodes into a horn blare that feels more triumphant than romantic. Barrett's delivery plays it relatively straight compared to his more ironic work — there's genuine affection for the source material here, and that reverence bleeds through. The production is punchy and live-feeling, all attack and no reverb decay. What the Reel Big Fish version does brilliantly is it reframes the song as a group experience — something to yell together rather than something to feel alone with. The longing is still there, but it's socialized, shared, performed outward instead of inward. This is karaoke-bar energy elevated: you reach for it when you're already in a good mood and want to get everyone in the room on the same page immediately.
