Automatic

There's a particular kind of restlessness that only a two-minute ska-punk song can capture — the feeling of your body moving faster than your brain can process why. "Automatic" runs on that exact fuel. The guitars churn in tight, percussive strokes while the horn section punches through in short blasts, less melodic than percussive, working with the drums to create something almost mechanical. The tempo doesn't so much build as it maintains a kind of controlled frenzy, like a car stuck in fourth gear with no fifth in sight. The vocals are clipped and direct, delivered with the urgency of someone reading off a list they already know by heart — which is exactly the point. The song is about the numbing loop of routine, the way habits harden into automation without anyone noticing. Emotionally it sits in an interesting space: there's frustration here, but also a kind of resigned self-awareness, the narrator watching himself repeat patterns he can't quite break. This is suburban Gainesville distilled — cheap beer, late nights, the same conversations with the same people in the same parking lots. It belongs to house shows, sticky venue floors, the back seat of someone's parents' car at seventeen. Less Than Jake take a fairly bleak premise and inject it with enough caffeine and brass that you don't realize how sad it is until the third listen.
