Garden

"Garden" strips some of Hinds' characteristic roughness away and replaces it with something more still and searching. The guitar tones are slightly more open here, less frenetic, allowing the space between notes to carry emotional weight. There's a haziness to the production that feels deliberate — not muddy, but softened, like memory that's been handled many times. The vocal delivery is more intimate than the band's more raucous material, the voice close-mic'd and unguarded, speaking rather than performing. The song moves at a pace that allows for introspection, the rhythm section providing a gentle pulse rather than a driving force. Thematically it circles something tender and possibly lost — a relationship, a place, a version of the self — with the particular attention of someone who keeps returning to the same thought and finding it slightly different each time. Even within its quieter register, there's a vitality to the way the guitars interact, small melodic figures weaving around each other. It rewards listening at a low volume when other sounds have faded out, in the last part of the evening when the day's noise has settled and there's space for something unresolved to sit with you without demanding resolution.
