Interpretation

The drumbeat is a coffin-lid thump, absolutely minimal, holding the whole structure together through sheer blunt force. The guitar plays a riff that borrows from the most primal vocabulary of early rock and roll — Chuck Berry's open road, Link Wray's menace — and then runs it through a swamp and leaves it there. Poison Ivy Rorschach's playing is deceptively controlled beneath Lux Interior's spiraling vocal performance, which here escalates from a sneer to something approaching a scream of genuine enthusiasm. The lyric is trash poetry, celebrating the lowest possible social register with complete sincerity, and this is the Cramps' essential trick: they never wink at you. The celebration of the grotesque is performed straight. It belongs to a New York art-damaged underground moment that was simultaneously in love with the most disreputable corners of American pop culture and deeply literary about that love. You reach for this when you want something that sounds completely alive precisely because it sounds completely wrong.
