Nite Expo
Osees
Osees operate at a frequency that feels slightly beyond what the human nervous system was designed to process comfortably, and "Nite Expo" exemplifies this beautifully. The track opens with a rolling guitar figure that immediately establishes an altered state — this is psychedelic garage rock in the tradition of the Electric Prunes and the Seeds, but run through John Dwyer's particular lens of maximalist energy and barely-controlled chaos. The organ sits in the mid-range, adding a carnival-adjacent coloring that tips the sound from merely strange into genuinely disorienting. The rhythm section doesn't so much keep time as create a kind of perpetual motion machine, maintaining the propulsive drive while the guitars layer increasingly frantic spirals overtop. Dwyer's vocals are delivered with a wired intensity, pitched somewhere between incantation and transmission — he sounds like he's reporting from a place slightly outside ordinary consciousness. Lyrically the song orbits themes of nocturnal restlessness, the city at odd hours when its surfaces reveal something they keep hidden in daylight. This is music for the San Francisco underground scene that Osees helped define — a lineage running back through 1960s psychedelia and forward into modern noise-rock, always preferring overload to restraint. Best experienced at maximum volume in a dark room, or at the front of a crowd with no space to move.
