I Am a Girlfriend
Nobunny
There's something genuinely disarming about this one — a fast-strummed punk track that uses its two-minute runtime to articulate a kind of total, almost embarrassing devotion. The production is ragged in the best possible way: compressed vocals, buzzing guitar tone, a drummer who plays like they're trying to break through the floor. But beneath the noise, the song has a surprisingly vulnerable emotional core. Champlin plays with the feminine noun sincerely rather than for shock value, inhabiting the role of someone utterly absorbed in another person's world, existing to support and accompany. It subverts punk's usual pose of detachment or aggression by centering absolute openness — the lyrics sketch out a persona defined by connection rather than rebellion. The humor is there, but it doesn't undercut the feeling; if anything, it makes the tenderness more credible by acknowledging its own strangeness. Musically, this sits in the tradition of the Undertones and early Replacements — pop sensibility buried in distortion, hooks that emerge from the racket the way candy-colored fish appear in murky water. It's a song about losing yourself in someone else without any ambivalence, and Champlin commits to it completely. Best heard loud, preferably in a small room with peeling paint, among people who know the words.
