Wet Blanket

If "Headache" represents METZ at their most ferocious, "Wet Blanket" shows what the band does with that same energy when applied to something slower and therefore somehow heavier. The tempo drops enough that each chord change has room to decay into the next, creating a suffocating density rather than the breakneck assault of their faster material. The guitar tone is enormous and corrosive, full of low-mid frequencies that sit in the body unpleasantly, and the production makes no attempt to flatter it — this is noise rock that understands ugliness as an expressive tool rather than a failure of craft. The drums anchor everything with a deliberate, almost pounding patience, while the bass fills out the low end into something genuinely oppressive. Edkins' vocal here has a different quality than on the band's faster tracks — there's a weariness in it, an exhaustion that reads as something more than aggression, something closer to desperation. The song captures the specific feeling of being drained by a person or situation that won't let you breathe, of having your energy actively suppressed by something external. Thematically it lands in that territory of emotional suffocation that noise rock has always been well-suited to explore. This is not music for casual listening — it demands something from you, pulls focus entirely — and it's best heard alone, at a volume that makes conversation impossible.
