Purgatory
The Growlers
This track operates on a different gravitational pull than much of The Growlers' catalog — slower, more suffocating, the music doing less to charm and more to unsettle. A droning, repetitive guitar figure establishes a loop that feels like stasis made audible, the sonic equivalent of being stuck in a waiting room with no exits. The production is deliberately murky, low-end heavy, the kind of mix where clarity itself seems withheld as a kind of punishment. Nielsen's vocal here is less performative than usual — stripped of some of its bardic swagger, he sounds genuinely trapped in the sentiment, working through a middle state between suffering and relief, a spiritual and emotional in-between where resolution is structurally impossible. The lyrical core circles around the idea of existing in a space that is neither here nor there, carrying the theological weight of the title without becoming literal about it. Drums are sparse, almost ritualistic rather than propulsive. The song never really climaxes; it just continues until it doesn't, which may be the point entirely. This is the kind of track that suits the hours between two and four in the morning, when the mind won't quiet down and the darkness outside the window seems less like night and more like a permanent condition that daylight merely interrupts.
