Interpretation

There's something almost violent about the joy in this number — a theatrical hurricane that refuses to let you catch your breath. The orchestra lurches forward with a carnival-barker swagger, brass punching through the texture like fists through cardboard, undercut by a jagged rock guitar that doesn't belong and knows it. The central vocal performance is a masterclass in controlled chaos: the voice careens between silky persuasion and unhinged glee, shifting registers mid-phrase as though the singer's body can barely contain what's happening inside it. The song operates as a seduction and a threat simultaneously, the narrator desperate to be witnessed, to be named, to exist in someone else's consciousness. There's a vaudevillian ghoulishness to the whole enterprise — think Tim Burton by way of a traveling freak show that got too comfortable. The lyrics circle around the idea of sound itself as a kind of resurrection, the notion that being heard is the closest thing to being alive. It's the song you'd reach for when you feel invisibly loud — when you have enormous energy and nowhere to put it. Listen in headphones, volume high, ideally while doing something slightly reckless.
