I've Got a Dream (Tangled)

This is a deliberately ridiculous showstopper that earns its ridiculousness through sheer commitment. The orchestration is raucous pub-theater — accordion, tuba, and jaunty strings conspiring in a style that evokes a fairy-tale tavern where everyone has had just enough to drink to become confessional. Zachary Levi leads an ensemble of gruff ruffians through a number built entirely on the joke that dangerous men have secret, tender dreams: one wants to be a pianist, one collects ceramic unicorns, the thugs and brutes reveal their hearts with increasing absurdity and sweetness. Levi's vocal performance threads a needle — he's clearly in on the gag but also genuinely charming, which keeps the number from tipping into pure sketch comedy. The structure escalates perfectly, each new revelation topping the last, and the choreography in the film version amplifies the sensation that this is a room full of people delighted to finally be honest. Musically, Menken is in a playful mode, the tempo bouncy and irresistible, the harmonies in the group sections deliberately lusty and broad. There's real emotional intelligence underneath the comedy — the song is making an argument that everyone has an interior life that doesn't match their exterior, that vulnerability is universal and absurd and human. You put this on when you need to laugh at something genuinely, or when you want a reminder that earnestness delivered with enough confidence becomes its own form of cool.
