Goodness Pt. 1
The Hotelier
There is a lightness to "Goodness Pt. 1" that feels almost fragile, as if The Hotelier are holding something delicate up to the sun for the first time. The guitar work here is clean and pastoral, acoustic and electric woven together without friction, and the tempo breathes rather than drives — unhurried, expansive. Holden's voice sounds different against this texture: less fractured, more open, like someone who has practiced saying something hopeful and finally believes it. The production on their second album leaned toward folk warmth and field-recording intimacy, and this opener captures that turn completely — birdsong wouldn't feel out of place here. The lyrics circle around the idea that goodness is possible, that the world can hold both damage and grace without one canceling out the other. Culturally, it marked a pivot away from the grief-soaked urgency of their debut toward something more contemplative and earned. This is a song for early mornings when the light comes in at a particular angle and you let yourself feel, briefly, that things might be okay. It is quiet hope, carefully handled.
