Zimmer opens with textures that feel geological — low, resonant tones that seem to emanate from the earth itself, from red dust and termite mounds and heat shimmer. African percussion establishes a pulse that's ceremonial without being exotic, specific rather than generalized, the kind of rhythmic foundation that makes the body want to move in ways it doesn't quite understand yet. Melodically, the piece is regal but never stiff: the main theme carries the particular dignity of lineage, of knowing where you come from and what that means.
