Two notes — a falling interval of such plainness it feels like something remembered rather than composed — carry the accumulated weight of isolation, displacement, and the particular longing of people who have been torn from their previous lives. The tempo is glacial, the dynamics hushed throughout, with a cello line that moves beneath the surface like something submerged. No resolution arrives; the theme ends by simply stopping, which is its own kind of statement about the nature of being lost. You reach for this on gray Sunday afternoons when you feel out of place in your own life, when you need music that doesn't try to comfort you but instead sits with you in the uncertainty, acknowledging that some feelings don't have answers.
