Newman's music for this western epic is perhaps the most purely cinematic of all the pieces here — it exists in perfect symbiosis with the landscape it was written to frame. The main theme opens with solo woodwinds and a melodic shape so open and expansive it seems to need a horizon to breathe in. When the full orchestra enters it does so with a frontier confidence, horns gleaming, strings surging, rhythms that evoke horses and dust and long distances. There is something fundamentally optimistic in the harmonic language — a belief in westward motion, in the idea that space means possibility. Newman's orchestration is masterly in its layering, voices entering and departing without ever cluttering the essential airiness of the main idea.
