Digital Bath
Deftones
The heaviness recedes entirely here, replaced by something hazier and more unsettling. Synth textures shimmer underneath clean guitars, the whole production adopting a cool, aquatic quality — water-smooth surfaces concealing uncertain depths. The tempo slows to a near-crawl, and the rhythm section provides only the lightest scaffolding, leaving enormous amounts of space around each note. Chino's voice is at its most intimate, delivered as though directly into the ear, occasionally multi-tracked into a soft, hovering chord beneath itself. The lyrical content is ambiguous in a way that feels intentional and slightly dark — a scene involving bathing and a kind of suspended, half-waking state, the boundary between tenderness and menace kept carefully undefined. This was part of the band's early exploration of shoegaze and dream-pop textures, years before those sounds became fashionable in heavy circles, and the instinct proved prescient. The song doesn't resolve cleanly — it fades the way consciousness does, incompletely. It's for late hours, specifically the hours after two in the morning when the house is dark and something in you wants music that matches the feeling of being suspended between waking and sleep, aware of the strangeness of being a body in a room.
