The Köln Concert, Part IIa arrives after the searching intensity of Part I like a change in atmospheric pressure — looser, more playful, the tension having released into something flowing and almost pastoral. Where Part I was about excavation, Part IIa feels more like a river that has found its channel and is content to move. Jarrett's left hand sketches a gentle rhythmic pulse while his right hand ornaments and wanders, finding melodic fragments that feel both spontaneous and inevitable. There are moments here that edge toward stride piano, toward Chopin, toward American folk music, and yet none of these reference points fully contain what he's doing — the improvisation resists genre the way a living conversation resists being summarized. The emotional temperature is warmer and more open than Part I, the vulnerability less anguished and more generous. You can feel the rapport between the performer and the audience in the quiet, the collective held breath of a few thousand people understanding they are witnessing something unrepeatable. This section particularly rewards headphone listening, where the intimacy of the piano sound — those imperfect, slightly metallic upper registers that Jarrett had to avoid — and the faint sound of the room all become part of the texture. It is music about time passing without grief.
