Interpretation

The song begins quietly, almost hesitantly, with a guitar pattern so delicate it seems afraid of itself — and then it gradually accumulates. Layer after layer arrives without announcement: additional guitars, bass, percussion building incrementally until the track becomes genuinely immense, a wall of interlocking textures that somehow retains clarity rather than collapsing into noise. The structure mimics the experience of being pulled down by something you have chosen to surrender to — each measure drawing you a little further from shore. Yorke's voice here is at its most unguarded, high and pure and strangely vulnerable, as if the falsetto register strips away any protective irony. The lyric constructs an image of radical acceptance, of finding peace in being consumed by something larger than yourself — the bottom of the ocean read as a destination rather than a catastrophe. It lives at the center of *In Rainbows*, that album where Radiohead allowed beauty back into the architecture after years of deliberate difficulty, and it represents perhaps the fullest expression of that openness. You reach for this song during transitions — long flights where the ground has disappeared beneath cloud, walks at dusk when the light is failing gently, moments where dissolution feels, briefly, like exactly what you need.
